Cosenza, (AKI) – Police in southern Italy on Friday seized 10 million euros worth of assets from a suspected member of the Calabrian mafia or ‘Ndrangheta, Francesco Faillace. Police seized the assets in the Cassano Jonio area near the city of Cosenza.
The assets included a company which manufactures shutters and metal gates registered in Faillace’s name, and a second firm registered which managed health spas.
Police also seized several other companies and 25 vehicles including luxury cars in the operation.
Faillace is currently under house arrest, accused of criminal association, extortion and robbery.
The ‘Ndrangheta has become one of the most powerful criminal organisations in Italy and is reported to have extended its power base through the European drug trafficking market.
It also has strong links in Canada, Australia and other parts of the world.
The Berlusconi government has vowed to defeat the mafia in Italy and has this year arrested several top mafia bosses and seized tens of millions of euros in suspected mafia assets.
