Cops find huge Mafia gun stash

ITALIAN cops have found a huge weapons arsenal belonging to a jailed Mafia boss.

The giant gun stash was found underneath a public park in Palermo, Sicily.

The arsenal includes an unexploded World War II mortar shell, machine guns and pistols, and ammunition.

Using a metal detector, police found the weapons today at Villa Malfitano, an English-style garden that is popular with Palermo strollers.

Anti-Mafia Prosecutor Gaetano Pace told reporters investigators learned of the cache in an intercepted conversation between jailed mobsters.

Italian news reports say investigators believe the weapons belonged to Salvatore Lo Piccolo, captured in 2007 after allegedly leading a ruthless crackdown on Palermo businessmen who refused to pay protection money.
