Berlusconi coalition partner accuses Mafia of Plot

A key coalition partner in Silvio Berlusconi’s Government said yesterday he believed that the Mafia had orchestrated the sex scandal engulfing the Prime Minister as retribution for Italy’s hard line on organised crime.

“I think everything has been put in place by the Mafia,” Umberto Bossi, the leader of the Northern League, said as he arrived at an event in Pian del Re in the north of the country. “We have introduced very tough laws against the Mafia.

“I already said to Berlusconi, ‘Look out because the Mafia is involved in that; the Mafia organises prostitution’. I am convinced that the Mafia organised this thing here.”

Mr Berlusconi admitted for the first time on Thursday that Giampaolo Tarantini, a businessman, had brought “beautiful women” to his parties but denied that he had ever paid for sex.

Yesterday reports emerged that Mr Tarantini, who is under investigation over drugs and prostitution, told prosecutors that he feared for his life after giving them the names of people allegedly responsible for several murders.

The split within the ranks of the Government worsened as Mr Berlusconi accused his main political ally inside his party, Gianfranco Fini, of “wanting to kill him politically” and Il Giornale, the Prime Minister’s mouthpiece newspaper, renewed its attacks on Mr Fini.

In an article published this week “Comrade Fini” was accused of failing to support the Prime Minister over the continuing sex scandal allegations and instead siding with the Left on issues from immigration and gay rights to euthanasia.

Mr Fini, the Speaker of the Lower House of Parliament, said that he did not deserve the bitter personal attacks.

Mr Fini, 57, is the former leader of Alleanza Nazionale, the “post-Fascist” party that merged with Mr Berlusconi’s Forza Italia to form the ruling People of Liberty (PdL) party. He is viewed as a potential successor to the Prime Minister, who turns 73 at the end of the month.
