The reputed former underboss of the New England mob has been sentenced to six years in prison for bribing an undercover FBI agent posing as a state official to try to win a $6 million contract on Boston’s Big Dig highway project.Carmen “The Cheeseman” DiNunzio, was sentenced Thursday in U.S. District Court.

DiNunzio had pleaded guilty to federal bribery charges, as well as separate state charges for extorting $500 per month from a Boston bookmaker. The bribery charges related to a deal to provide soil for the highway project.

Under a plea agreement with prosecutors, DiNunzio will serve six years. The plea deal covers both the state and federal cases.

Prosecutors say DiNunzio, who owned a cheese shop in Boston, had been underboss of the New England branch of the Mafia since 2004.
