Morbidly obese mob boss Carmen “The Cheeseman” DiNunzio has been given the green light by a federal judge to step outside of house arrest one hour a day so he can exercise and try to lose weight.
U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge Joyce London Alexander yesterday approved a fitness plan for DiNunzio, owner of the North End’s Fresh Cheese shop and reputed godfather of the Boston Mafia, that grants him 60 minutes of freedom to walk in a park or sweat his way to svelteness in a gym.
Alexander is also allowing DiNunzio, 51, to periodically stay overnight at Massachusetts General Hospital’s Sleep Lab to treat what doctors call his “severe” sleep apnea.
DiNunzio weighed in at a life-threatening 400 pounds when Alexander ordered him confined to his East Boston apartment on an electronic bracelet in May while he awaits trial for allegedly concocting a scam to sell $6 million worth of untested loam to the Big Dig.
Since then, doctors at MGH have told Alexander that DiNunzio suffers from diabetes and heart failure and needs to be exercising aerobically for “at least” 30 minutes a day.
DiNunzio’s attorney, Anthony Cardinale, could not be reached for comment yesterday.
DiNunzio, charged with conspiracy to commit bribery, is to notify federal pretrial services each day where he will be working out.
