Lyndhurst man indicted in 1992 mob hit

Authorities have charged a Lyndhurst man with playing a key role in a legendary Genovese crime family mob hit arranged more than 18 years ago by reputed New Jersey mobster Anthony Prisco.

An indictment handed up by a Bronx grand jury accuses Paul “Doc” Gaccione, 62, of driving the van that contained the bullet-riddled body of 32-year-old Angelo Sangiuolo, a family member targeted for death when his bosses thought he was robbing them.

Police found Sangiuolo in the parking lot of a McDonald’s restaurant near a Bronx social club operated by Prisco in June 1992.

Gaccione faces a prison term of 25 years to life if convicted of murder, Bronx District Attorney Robert T. Johnson said. A judge ordered him held without bail after police arrested him at home last month, he said.

Prisco received a life sentence for arranging the murder of Sangiuolo, his cousin, in a federal trial last year.

Prisco set up the hit after learning that Sangiuolo had knocked off at least four Bronx gambling operations run by the crime family, law enforcement sources told The New York Daily News.

After then-Genovese boss Vincent “Chin” Gigante gave his blessing, Prisco allegedly assigned the job to Gaccione and John “Johnny Balls” Leto. The pair concocted a ruse to lure Sangiuolo to his club — Prisco promised Sangiuolo he would help him with a problem.

But the Sangiuolo was quickly given the dreaded order to “take a ride” with Gaccione and Leto, the sources said.

Investigators said they believe Gaccione drove the van, with Sangiuolo riding shotgun and Leto in the backseat, to a McDonald’s in Pelham Bay. Once in the parking lot, Leto waited for a subway train to rumble overhead and shot Sangiuolo, the sources said.

Prisco picked up Gaccione and Leto at the McDonald’s and helped them ditch the murder weapon.
