The victim, who is in his 40s and has been named locally as Nicky Ayers, was found outside a house in the West Derby area.
Merseyside Police say they don’t yet know the motive for the shooting in South Cantril Avenue at 12.10am.
The Liverpool Daily Post said Mr Ayers was the manager of a Sunday football league team called Western Approaches FC but had a “fearsome reputation”.
In a separate incident in Liverpool, a taxi driver was left in a critical condition after being shot in the back.
A man was heard shouting “I’m sorry, I’m sorry” as he ran away after allegedly shooting the man through a car seat.
The attack happened in the Croxteth area at 10.30pm on Wednesday and was reported by two women who found the victim bleeding heavily in his car.
Police say the 25-year-old is in a critical condition and are appealing for the gunman to hand himself in.
One of the most high-profile shootings in Liverpool is that of 11-year-old Rhys Jones who died in 2007.
But in the three years since the boy’s death, gun crime has remained a big problem for the city.
