10 Mexican Police Officers Killed In Ambush

(RTTNews) – At least 10 Mexican federal police officers were killed Monday after suspected drug cartel hit-men ambushed their convoy in the central coastal state of Michoacan, said officials.

According to officials, the police convoy was ambushed in the city of Zitacuaro when it was returning to Mexico City from the city of Hidalgo.

Mexican government confirmed the police deaths, with the country’s Information Ministry saying in a statement that an unknown number of the assailants were also killed and wounded in the attack.

Separately, at least 17 inmates were killed after fighting between rival drug gangs broke out in a prison in the northwestern city of Culiacan. All the victims reportedly died of gunshot wounds.

Authorities, who have since regained control over the prison, said they have recovered an AK-47 assault rifle and two large-caliber handguns from the inmates.

Local reports indicated that the fighting in the prison was between members of the Zetas drug gang and the powerful Sinaloa cartel, adding that some prison guards were also injured in the clashes.

According to Mexican government, more than 22,500 people have been killed in the country in drug-related violence in the last three years. The killings continue despite the deployment of thousands of troops by President Felipe Calderon to stem the escalating drug related violence in the country.

In addition to the war against drug cartels, President Calderon has also launched a massive anti-corruption campaign, called Operation Clean-up, to identify and to punish public servants with alleged links to the drug cartels.
