Junior Gotti mobster trial set to begin

THE most infamous figure in New York Mafia circles is about to go on trial in a showdown that US authorities hope will finally end his Houdini-like ability to escape charges.
Jury selection is scheduled to start today in a Manhattan federal court, where John Gotti jnr, 45, is accused of a role in three gangland slayings during a long racketeering career in New York and Florida.
But Gotti, son of the late Gambino crime family boss ”Dapper Don” John Gotti, says he is not even part of the Cosa Nostra.
Three other racketeering trials in the past five years have ended without verdict against Gotti. His lawyers claim the authorities are pursuing a vendetta against a reformed man.
Prosecutors are expected to produce damaging testimony supporting the 26-page indictment against Gotti, who they allege rose through the ranks to serve as acting boss after his father’s imprisonment. Key evidence will come from turncoats, people the authorities call ”co-operating witnesses” and Gotti’s supporters term ”rats”.
The defence says Gotti is not the successor to his father, who died in prison in 2002.
The Gotti family has been notorious since Gotti snr took over the Gambino family following the gunning down of previous boss Paul Castellano outside a Manhattan steak house. Gotti snr was sentenced to life in prison in 1992.
