Colombo boss Alphonse (Allie Boy) Persico sentenced to life in prison for 1999 hit

Like father, like son.
Colombo boss Alphonse (Allie Boy) Persico was sentenced Friday to life in prison without parole for ordering the 1999 murder of a rival he feared was poised to take over the crime family.
“The defendant was born into the [Mafia] life and like his father, Carmine Persico, will spend the rest of his life in prison,” Long Island Federal Court Judge Joanna Seybert said, effectively ensuring both men will die in jail.
Alphonse Persico was convicted in 2007 of marking for death then-underboss William (Wild Bill) Cutolo. His father is doing life for a 1986 murder/racketeering conviction.
Smiling and chatting with his lawyer, Alphonse Persico declined to make a statement, but Seybert and the prosecutor had plenty to say.
Assistant U.S. Attorney John Buretta read a statement from the Cutolos ripping Persico and underling John (Jackie) DeRoss, who was also convicted of orchestrating the rubout and warning Cutolo’s family to keep silent.
“Alphonse Persico and Jackie DeRoss are cowards who threatened women and children to protect themselves,” Buretta said.
Seybert contrasted the gangster’s “civility” in court with the way he eliminated a competitor “with the ease of a business decision.”
“It’s sad for the defendant and his family, but it’s a choice he made. His intelligence and personality might have served him well in legitimate business.”
Persico and Cutolo were on competing sides during the bloody Colombo civil war in 1991. Last fall, the FBI recovered Cutolo’s buried remains in an industrial park area in Farmingdale.
Persico, 55, and DeRoss, 71, who was also sentenced to life, are appealing.
